Our Crops

Chía is certainly our flag ship product , only a couple of years ago, it was the only nutraceutical grain we carried. Although this is not so any more, we certainly carry and export a relatively big volume of it  , compared to our other grains. As we always have growers in-transition to organic, we are able to offer both organic and conventional Chía every year.

  • Historians place migration of Chía Seed from Mexico into Nicaragua , as being brought down by  the Nahualt People in the year 780 A.D.Chía was , during the Aztec and Mayan Empire, one of four important crops, together with Maize, Beans and Amaranth.The Nahualt People valued it as a " Super Food" long before Dr. Oz declared it so, it was regarded food for messenger runners and warriors of the Empire.

Our Chia is grown in Nicaragua's high lands, at no less than 800 meters above sea level, so it usually lives in harmony near or within organic coffee and organic sesame plantations. It is a photoperiodic plant, which means that we can only get one harvest per year in a given local, hence,  we have organic chia available from March through to June of every year.




Our variety of Chía has evolved to be different from its Mexican and South American relatives, the most easy to recognize difference is in its color. Nicaraguan Chía is completely black (no white grains) and its black color is very intense, it is not pale gray , as its South American cousin. It also has a very important nutritional difference, Nicaraguan Chía has a higher Omega-3 content as a percentage of total weight , although it has a slightly less amount of oil per kilogram of seed. However, as the seed is sold as a nutraceutical in most cases, its higher Omega - 3 assay, makes it a very sought after grain. 



Our growers average 2 hectares per family and they grow around 350 Kg per every hectare. Chia is considered a "cash crop" and it is highly valued by our growers , as it is very profitable , when compared to other more traditional alternatives such as Maize and Beans. All family members (expect minors ) are involved in some or all parts of the process, this gives the family "self employment" and counts as part of the betterment of their family income. Growing organic Chía is a very labor intensive activity as no synthetic herbicides can be used, all weed control is done manually and all soil preparation is done alms exclusively by horse drawn plow. 



We are certified USDA NOP, EU and JAS Organic and we can ship to the North American Market, Europe and Asia. Although our biggest market so far is the United States, we have clients in Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico. We certainly can ship anywhere our clients wish , and  love getting a challenging destination once in a while.
